“The most reliable sign, the most universal behavior of unscrupulous people, is, perversely, an appeal to our sympathy.”

The sociopath is incapable of feeling guilt, remorse or even concern.  They seamlessly blend in but live outside the social contract that binds the rest of us. They are callous and incredibly destructive and will NEVER have an authentic work relationship with ANYONE.  Their sole objective is to use charm and deceit to manipulate others.  To learn more, please pick up a copy of Dr. Martha Stout’s book, “The Sociopath Next Door”. Below are some of Dr. Stout’s rules for recognizing AND dealing with a corporate sociopath.

These people make up about 4-5% of the population and do not look evil.  They look completely “normal.”  However, contrary to popular opinions that frequently circulate inside companies, these people have absolutely ZERO redeeming characteristics.  Do not believe people who tell you there is“ some good” in everyone.  Such opinions, best intent aside,  are misguided and completely wrong.

Go with your “gut.”  If you “smell” trouble, you are more than likely right.

Someone telling one lie is possibly a misunderstanding.  Two lies is a serious mistake. Three lies and you are, almostfor sure, dealing with a sociopath.

Watch for people who want to violate with grand gestures about having the solution to a problem.,

Accept compliments.  Be wary of flattery!

Do not mistake fear for respect.

Watch for people who actively campaign, on a regular basis, for your sympathy regardless of their actions.

Sociopaths are not redeemable. Ever!

The only sure way to defend yourself from a sociopath is to avoid them entirely.

Perform Better!
